Granville Entertainment Group (GEG) is the name of the Hospitality/Entertainment-oriented businesses owned or controlled by the Culling family. In 1988 the President of GEG, Blaine Culling, and his sister, Laurel Stewart, anticipated the revitalization of Vancouver’s Downtown South and opened The Roxy Cabaret on Granville Street. The 295-seat cabaret quickly became—and still remains—one of the top nightclubs in Vancouver. After the Roxy, GEG became involved in a variety of different business ventures and properties such as Planet Café (1991), the Vogue Theatre and the adjacent Galaxy Coffee Bar (1994). Since 1996, GEG’s projects have continued to herald changes to the downtown core and brought about the designation of Granville Street as the City’s official Entertainment District. Building on the successes of their past business ventures, GEG bought, renovated and reopened the old Nelson Place Hotel under the name Hotel Dakota, followed by Fred’s Tavern, and the immediately successful BaBalu Tapas Lounge.
After the unfortunate fire in 2001 that saw BaBalu’s, Fred’s Tavern and the Hotel Dakota destroyed, GEG rebuilt the rooms and opened Doolin’s Irish Pub, a 220-person traditional Irish pub that still thrives today, The Cellar Nightclub (now the Belmont Bar), a 250-person nightclub offering live music and entertainment as well as the iconic Comfort Inn Downtown Hotel.
In 2010, GEG won the rights to host the Official Irish House for the 2010 Olympic Games and transformed the Comfort Inn Hotel parking lot into a massive 1000 person tented outdoor beer garden with live entertainment and TV screens. Following their Olympic success, in the fall of 2010 GEG opened Legacy Liquor Store in the heart of Athletes Village. The largest privately owned liquor store in the province was designed to turn the liquor buying process into shopping experience. Legacy quickly grew to be a destination in Vancouver by offering products unavailable anywhere else.
In 2014, seeing the need for a craft beer lounge and cocktail bar on Granville Street, GEG transformed The Cellar Nightclub into a brand new space with major renovations. This newest venture, The Belmont, has been taking Granville Street by storm ever since by featuring local craft beer, custom cocktails and live music found nowhere else in the area.
Granville Entertainment Group continues to be at the forefront of the entertainment scene in Vancouver and continually strives for excellence by offering unprecedented customer service and unique products and services.
